Bison Farm Pole Barn Destroyed by Fire

In another example of how hazardous fires can be to commercial buildings, a pole barn in Rosebush, MI was destroyed by a fire on Tuesday. The Pohl Bison Farm fire was reported at 8:45 pm on Tuesday night and as of 8:30 am the next day firefighters were still on the scene. The post-frame building was a rounded, fabric-covered barn that housed machinery and roughly 150 bales of hay.

“We basically had the fire under control by about midnight,” Isabella Northeast Fire Chief Matt Kampf told the Morning Sun News, “Since then, we’ve been monitoring, pushing around the hay, waiting for it to burn.”

Though the barn is very close to the 60 bison the Pohl family owns, no animals were injured in the blaze. However, the machinery and hay bales were lost. Pohl told the Morning News that the building was insured and he plans to rebuild.

The cause of the fire is still unknown but it serves as a stark reminder to pole barn owners of how easy it is for wood pole barns to catch fire and if the contents of the barn include hay or other flammable items it can be very hard to extinguish the blaze.

Having animals near the pole barn or housed in the barn can be extremely dangerous if a fire starts. While Pohl was lucky in that his bison were out grazing when the fire began, other farmers have not been as fortunate and have lost livestock due to pole barn fires.
