Common Pole Barn Building Code Violations

According to the Common Code Violations survey released by the International Code Council and the National Association of Homebuilders in 2013, about 45 percent of residential field inspections result in at least one jobsite code violation. Since most pole barns are either used as residences or are constructed as accessories to residences, this is an important topic to address.

The survey found that code compliance is improving across the country. Inspectors are generally noting a significantly lower number of failed inspections than they did when a similar survey was published in 2006.

This change is primarily due to the costs associated with failed inspections in terms of both time and money. It is also because many states have required training for contractors to educate them on building code requirements. Since many states now require training to get or maintain a license, builders have a better knowledge of code requirements.

Even though things are improving and violations are down, the numbers are still high. One of the most common reasons for failed inspections is missing documentation. This was the most commonly cited reason given by many municipalities across the United States. If documentation such as building plans is missing, many inspectors will automatically issue a violation and will sometimes require construction to halt completely until the builder can provide the drawings.

Another common problem that is cited is errors in braced or sheer walls. Nails are sometimes overdriven on wall bracing panels, which can reduce the strength of panels. Overdriving nails can also be a problem when nailing off hangers because it can dimple the steel and cause it to lose strength.
