Common Pole Barn Mistakes

While building a pole barn or post-frame structure is generally considered to be a relatively easy project, it doesn't mean it can't be frustrating. If this is your first time building a pole barn there will definitely be a learning curve. Here are a few of the most common mistakes people make when constructing a pole barn from a kit.

Guessing Wrong on Materials: When it comes to construction, there's the vision in your head and the actual building. With all the materials available today when it comes to pole barns it can be confusing when it comes to place an order. First-time builders are susceptible to being sold products they don't really need and this can lead to a pile of stuff you have no need for. There is also a chance you underestimate what you need and halfway through the project you realize you don't have enough to finish. If it is your first time around, consult with someone who has experience to avoid common pitfalls.

Going Cheap & Easy: Buying cheap materials and rushing a project will lead to a poorly constructed building that is more of a liability than a storage solution. Don't make the mistake of buying the cheapest materials possible and hurrying mundane tasks such as measuring and sanding. Cutting corners and being cheap will come back to bite you in the end and if it is worth doing, then it is worth doing right.

Not Having a Plan: A common mistake many first-time pole barn builders make is beginning without a plan. This is a huge mistake. Though pole barns are fairly simple in design it doesn't mean you can just wing it. Trying to build a shed without a blueprint can easily lead to a lousy structure that will need to be torn down just for safety's sake. Always plan ahead and include a detailed list of the materials you need, a blueprint and estimates for time.
