Fire Destroys Pole Barn in Pennsylvania

November 14, 2014

We like to promote the many benefits of a pole barn building, but if you are constructing yours out of wood you need to be aware of the risk posed by fire. Yesterday at 6:15 p.m. a pole barn in Cowanshannock, PA was ruined when sparks from burning garbage ignited the structure.

Rural Valley fire Chief Kevin Nelson told the Tribune newspaper, "He (Fred Troup) had been burning garbage behind the garage prior to the fire, so we're pretty much assuming the wind took the hot sparks from the garbage pile."

Troup's home is where the pole barn was located. The pole barn measured approximately 28' x 40' and was used to house tractors, an ATV and tools. By the time the fire was extinguished it was apparent the tractors were destroyed. Also lost was a pick-up truck that was parked just in front of the barn.

Also in the building were propane tanks. Nearby residents reported hearing explosions before fire crews arrived and it is believed the fire was kindled by dry leaves and spread quickly through the yard. Fire crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading any further and luckily no one was injured in the blaze.

Burning any type of material, from leaves to garbage, often requires a permit by the town or county and it is unknown if Mr. Troup was in violation of any laws by igniting the fire. This incident is a clear example of how dangerous fire can be when near a wood pole barn. Though fire crews arrived quickly the building was all but gone in a matter of minutes.
