How to Obtain a Building Permit & Why it is Needed?

So you’ve decided you want to construct a pole barn on your property? There are many decisions to make during this process. What type of pole barn are you going to construct and what is its’ main purpose…a garage, a workshop, a horse barn, or that perfect storage barn for those “big boy toys”?

In all of those moments in decision making, a number of property owners forget the most critical piece of the project…a building permit!!

You may ask, “What is a building permit for a pole barn? And why do I need one?” A building permit is an authorized document permitting a property owner to construct a pole building on said owner’s property.

Obtaining a building permit can be simple to extensive, depending on the area you are planning on constructing a new pole barn structure.

Building permits function in a number of beneficial ways. A building permit for a new storage unit will ensure that all local building ordinances are kept to the standard deemed necessary to local residents & governing officials. These standards involve not only safety issues, but aesthetics as well.

Another function building permits provide is one of future growth. Governing bodies on the local, state, and federal level measure the number of building permit applications to forecast new construction in certain regions. This ultimately plays an important factor in determining the inflation rate of the country, as a whole.

Once you obtain a building permit application, it is necessary to thoroughly complete all areas of the application and provide any and all documentation and drawings required by your local governing body.

Most jurisdictions require a set of drawings prior to approval and issue of the building permit. It is imperative to select a pole barn kit supplier that can provide detailed drawings, engineered stamped truss drawings, and engineered stamped complete drawings for each and every pole barn kit they sell. Select a supplier that is willing to work closely with your local municipality.

Let’s say you want to make sure you can obtain a permit prior to making your pole barn kit purchase. A good pole barn package supplier will provide detailed drawings for a small nominal fee. Most can negotiate a credit for the fee back to you, the consumer, upon final purchase of your kit.

Don’t let the daunting idea of obtaining a building permit stop you from erecting the pole barn or garage kit you’ve been longing to have.
