Keeping Animals Out of Your Pole Barn

Depending on where you live and where your pole barn is placed, you may have created an attractive place for animals to seek shelter. As the weather starts to get cooler, smaller critters such as squirrels, raccoons and skunks will begin to look for durable and warm shelters where they can escape the late fall and winter cold. A pole barn is just the spot they are looking for.

Unless you use your pole barn as a residence you may not know that animals are nesting in your post frame building. If you simply use your building for parking vehicles or storing equipment and other materials chances are you won't even notice if a few squirrels have taken up residence in a small corner, hidden by heavy equipment and bags of grain.

However, the longer animals stay in your pole barn the more problems will arise. When animals get comfortable in a building they will start to get cozy and build nests, mate and other activities that can lead to damage. Squirrels are especially known for their clawing and if your pole barn is made of wood this can lead to cracks and holes that may compromise the integrity of your structure.

The best way to avoid animal problems is to not let them in. Make sure your pole barn is built properly and sealed where it needs to be so small critters can't slip in through vents, floor boards and other likely entrances. Routinely check the inside of your pole barn and look for signs that animals have been present such as cracked nuts, droppings and claw marks. If equipment or other large items haven't been moved for some time shift things around to ensure a skunk or raccoon isn't hiding out in a darkened corner.

If you do come across animals in your pole barn do not try to remove them on your own. Many wild animals carry rabies and if threatened will fight back by biting and clawing. Contact a wildlife control expert who can safely remove wild animals from your pole barn.
