Pole Barns & Insurance

Building a pole barn building requires more than just a kit and the right tools. To do the job properly and safely, you need to consider insurance policies that will protect you, additional workers you hire and your materials.

If you decide to be the general contractor for the project you would be smart to look into commercial liability insurance. If you have hired help and they get injured on the job or if a tractor accidentally damages the home, you could be liable. Don't count on your homeowner's insurance policy to cover these situations. What you need is a commercial policy for general liability. If you hire workers to help on the project you also need to consider a worker's compensation policy.

You also need to be concerned about the materials you are using to build a post frame structure. Check with your local insurance agent and review your homeowner's policy to see if it covers the cost of materials being used. If the project calls for a substantial amount of materials on site, you may want to consider increasing your personal property coverage.

Once the project is completed you now need to concern yourself with what is called separate structures. A typical homeowner's policy defaults to 10% of your primary dwelling coverage for separate structures. Depending on what you will be using your pole barn for and how often, you may want to consider increasing your separate structures coverage to ensure you are protected to the degree you are comfortable with.

Be smart and safe when building a pole barn on your property. Speak with your insurance agent and make sound decisions with your coverage.
