Preparing Pole Barns for Autumn

If you own a pole barn in a state where the weather will be changing after Labor Day, there are some tips you should be aware of to prepare for the colder autumn months. Unlike people that have post-frame buildings in Florida and Arizona where the weather stays the same, others will have to adjust as the seasons change and when summer turns to fall it is important to do some maintenance checks on your pole barn.

The first thing you want to inspect is the roof. If you have gutters on your pole barn, now is the time to clean. Depending on where you live, fall can include a deluge of dead leaves which will easily cause your gutter system to clog and this can lead to a number of problems with the roof. Spend a warm afternoon looking over the roof of your pole barn and look for any cracks, holes or signs of warping. You may need to replace a few shingles to ensure the integrity of the roof lasts through the winter.

If your pole barn has a heating system, now is the time to check it. Many homeowners make the mistake of waiting for that first freezing day to turn the heat on and this often results in pipes bursting. You don't want a flood of water in your pole barn when the temperatures are in the single digits. Give your heating system a test when the weather is still mild to check that everything works.

Many people use their pole barn for storage in the fall and winter and if this is the case, now is a good time to do a thorough cleaning. A lot of junk can pile up in a pole barn over the summer and if you want to ensure you have room for equipment and materials you will need to start cleaning now. Get rid of anything you won't be using and consider adding storage shelves to increase your space.
