Preparing Pole Barns for Heavy Rain

As summer approaches, depending on where you live, you may be looking at severe and sustained rain storms. Many parts of the country will experience terrific rain squalls during June and July and this can lead to a lot of problems including downed power lines, flooding and damage to a home or pole barn building.

If you live in an area that is known for heavy summer rains, follow some tips that will keep your pole barn safe.

The first thing you should do is insure your pole barn for floods. This is something you need to ask about because flood coverage is rarely including in homeowner's insurance so it certainly won't be part of a basic pole barn insurance package. If your pole barn is near a lake, river or waterfront this is something you should definitely consider. A flood can very easily ruin everything in a pole barn including produce, equipment and perishables as well as the structure of the pole barn. Ask your insurance representative about flood insurance.

If you don't get floods, you could still get a number of problems from heavy rain. If your pole barn doesn't have a gutter or it does and the gutter is clogged this can lead to damage with the roof, siding and foundation. If the area you live in is prone to rain you should definitely consider installing a rain gutter and having it cleaned annually to remove any debris that can cause a clog.

As a last resort, if a flood advisory is in effect, you may want to dig a moat around the pole barn for flood water to fill. You should also consider lining the building side of the moat with sandbags to help keep heavy floods from crashing into your pole barn. Mind you, these are only temporary fixes and if the flood is severe it probably won't do more than slow it down. However, it could give you enough time to get valuable equipment and machinery to higher ground.
