Prepping Pole Barns for Summer

As summer approaches, you need to start thinking about preparing your pole barn for the heat. Depending on where you live, you may encounter days where the temperature can near 100 degrees Fahrenheit and a high percentage of humidity. This can for stifling and uncomfortable, not to mention life-threatening, conditions in a pole barn building.

If you are planning in working in your pole barn or using it to shelter live animals and produce, now is the time to take steps that will ensure your pole barn stays cool, is well ventilated and is comfortable for people and animals to be in.

One thing you should definitely consider doing is adding vents. This does not require an expensive contracting job and can be easily done in a day. By adding vents to the ceilings and ends of the post frame building you ensure that the hot air circulates properly and won't remain stagnant. Having vents can make a big difference.

If you have the means, you may also want to consider installing an air conditioning unit or ceiling fan. If you live in the south or southwest, an air conditioner is definitely worth the money. On days when the temperatures and humidity are high, being in a pole barn can feel like an oven. Simple vents and fans will only circulate unbearably hot air.

However, by installing an air conditioning unit, or even a central air system, you regulate the temperature inside the building and can keep conditions cool and comfortable.
