Using Pole Barns for Emergencies

No matter where you live, there are natural disasters and climate hazards that can cause significant damage to your home. Floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and tornados are just a few of the major disruptions people across the country have to be prepared for and if you own a pole barn building there may come a time when you need to use this structure as an emergency shelter.

While there is no guarantee your pole barn will fare any better in a storm than your home, it is still a good idea to outfit your post frame building for emergencies. Having a safe place you can retreat to with family and pets to escape the destruction of a major disaster is very important and with the right supplies you can survive in your shelter for days if necessary.

If you have a pole barn and want it to be prepared for emergencies consider stocking it with the following emergency supplies:

  • Canned food and purified drinking water
  • Blankets, air mattresses and pillows
  • Flashlights, waterproof matches, batteries and candles
  • Crank radio and flares
  • First aid kit
  • Portable toilet

These are just some of the basic emergency supplies you will need if displaced from your home due to a storm. Having a durable cabinet or locker where you can store these items is a wise decision since you don't want to spend time rummaging around looking for items when dealing with a natural disaster.
